Information for Students

Take Part in Economics Research in Your Free Time

Keio University students can take part in economic experiments either on the Mita Campus or online from home. Compensation is provided according to the terms of each experiment.

What Are Economic Experiments?

Economic experiments are research studies that examine how people make decisions.

The Institute for Economic Studies, Keio University is recruiting Keio University students to participate in economic experiments.

During an experiment, you may be asked to make simple choices on a computer or complete a survey. No prior knowledge of economics is required.

Experiments are conducted primarily at the Experimental Economics Laboratory on the Mita Campus or online. You can participate on the Mita Campus between classes or online from home.

About Compensation

Each recruitment notice states the expected duration, compensation amount, payment method, and whether additional payments are possible. You can review these details before signing up.

Many paid experiments include a base payment of ¥500. Additional payments may depend on your decisions or the design of the experiment.

For standard paid experiments conducted on the Mita Campus, total compensation is set at an hourly equivalent of at least ¥1,230.

Compensation arrangements may differ for online studies, brief questionnaires, and other types of research. Please check the recruitment notice for each study.

Base Payment of ¥500Many paid experiments include a base payment of ¥500.
Additional PaymentsAdditional payments may depend on your decisions or the design of the experiment.
Hourly Equivalent of at Least ¥1,230This is the standard for paid experiments conducted on the Mita Campus.

Participate Between Classes

You can participate in experiments between classes at the Experimental Economics Laboratory on the Mita Campus.

Participate Online from Home

Some experiments are conducted online. You can participate from home or another suitable location if you meet the stated requirements.

Many paid experiments include a base payment of ¥500, with possible additional payments depending on the experiment.

For standard paid experiments conducted on the Mita Campus, total compensation is set at an hourly equivalent of at least ¥1,230.

No Prior Knowledge of Economics Required

The researcher will provide all necessary instructions before the experiment. No specialized preparation is required.

The data generated by participants’ decisions are used for research and education in economics.

Participation Process

After you register, HROOT will email you when an experiment for which you may be eligible is recruiting participants.

Register with HROOT

Register with HROOT, the participant recruitment system for economic experiments. You will need a Keio University email address and some basic information.

Check Your Invitation Email

HROOT will email you when a study matching your eligibility criteria is recruiting participants.

Sign Up for a Session That Fits Your Schedule

Review the recruitment notice and select a session. The notice will explain the procedures, expected duration, compensation, and any possible additional payments.

Take Part in the Experiment

Experiments are conducted either on the Mita Campus or online. Before the session begins, the researcher will explain the procedures and how your data will be handled. You may participate after reviewing this information and providing informed consent.

Receive Compensation

Compensation will be paid using the method specified for the experiment. Payment may be made in cash or by bank transfer. A bank transfer requires your bank account details.

Research Ethics and Informed Consent

Participation is voluntary and based on informed consent.

All experiments follow procedures that have been reviewed and approved in advance by the relevant research ethics committee at Keio University. The risks involved are no greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life.

Before an experiment begins, the researcher will explain the procedures and how your data will be handled. You may decide not to participate after receiving this explanation.

Registering with HROOT, deciding whether to participate, and the choices you make during an experiment will not affect your grades, coursework, or academic standing at Keio University.

Attendance and Cancellation Policy

Experiments require a specified number of participants in order to proceed.

If you cannot attend a session after signing up, please cancel through HROOT or contact us as soon as possible.

No-shows can disrupt experiment sessions and research plans. If you miss two sessions without prior notice or a valid reason, your HROOT registration will be canceled, and you will not be permitted to register again.

For some sessions, we may accept more sign-ups than the number of participants needed in order to account for possible absences. If more participants arrive than are needed, some may not be able to take part. Anyone who arrives on time but cannot participate for this reason will still receive the announced base payment.
