Outline of the Keio Household Panel Survey (KHPS)

Survey Objectives

Panel surveys are becoming essential for today’s social science research and policy evaluationt, since they facilitate analyses of dynamic behavior by economic entities and analyses considering heterogeneity that cannot be observed by continuously following the same individuals. However, In Japan  there is no household panel survey that did not focus on a specific class but rather reflected the population composition of society as a whole, such as the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) in the U.S. and the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) in Europe.

To respond to such demands, the Keio Household Panel Survey (KHPS) has been implemented continuously since 2004 on 4,000 households and 7,000 individuals nationwide. An additional survey on a cohort of about 1,400 households and 2,500 individuals was initiated from 2007.

Survey Items

The questionaries of the survey consist of the information concerning respondents’ employment, school attendance, lifestyle, time allocation, health status and environmental awareness, and in addition, cover comprehensive topics including household composition, income, expenses, assets and housing etc. The first year’s survey was also designed to include question items regarding the respondents’ prior school and employment history for each year from age 18, as a retrospective panel survey. For married respondents, the survey asks the same questions of their spouses.

Survey Method

The first Keio Household Panel Survey (KHPS) was conducted in January 2004, with annual follow-up surveys on the same respondents up until today. The subjects for the first survey were 4,005 men and women (including five preliminary  subjects) aged 20-69 as of January 31, 2004, selected using two-stage stratified random sampling. As of now(October. 2012), the most recent  survey was conducted in 2010, so seven years of survey data have been accumulated. From 2007, the survey was initiated on an additional 1,419 men and women (including 19 reserve subjects) selected using the same sampling technique. The KHPS is conducted by investigators using the Drop-Off /Pick-Up(DOPU) Method, and in principle response by spouses or other substitutes is not permitted.
